Discover how walking can help you process uncertainty and reveal the next version of you.
You know the phase:
You’re standing at some metaphorical crossroads (or actual kitchen counter), half-seriously asking your cat if you should quit your job, end your relationship, move to another continent, start a sourdough empire, or just binge-watch documentaries until life makes sense again.
Welcome to uncertainty. Population: You. (And, honestly, most of the rest of the planet right now.)
Here’s what nobody tells you:
When life becomes mentally foggy, it’s your feet—not your brain—that might lead the way out.
Putting One Foot in Front of the Other
When everything feels tangled—your thoughts, your feelings, your future plans—walking cuts through the noise.
There’s something oddly magical about the rhythmic sound of your footsteps, the fresh air, the slow but steady movement forward. It doesn’t solve your problems instantly (wouldn’t that be lovely?) but it does shift your perspective.
That’s why I always say: Big decisions are best made one step at a time.
It’s not just a metaphor. It’s neuroscience, it’s soulwork, and it’s something the pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago have known for centuries.
Why Walking Works (Even When Nothing Else Does)
Let’s break it down.
When you walk, especially in nature, a few wonderful things happen:
- Your nervous system calms down. Suddenly, you’re not operating from fight-or-flight panic mode.
- Your brain starts syncing—literally. The two hemispheres begin to talk to each other better, which is great news when you’re trying to make sense of complex emotions.
- You tap into something primal: forward motion = progress = hope.
It’s no coincidence that cultures throughout history have used walking as a form of prayer, meditation, or rite of passage. When you walk, your body processes what your mind can’t yet articulate.
You begin to hear the truth beneath the noise.
Metaphors, Blisters, and Beautiful Breakthroughs
The Camino de Santiago is a masterclass in letting go of control, perfectionism, and the myth of having it all figured out.
The Camino doesn’t care about your spreadsheet. It doesn’t consult your five-year plan. It simply asks: Will you take one more step today, even when it hurts a bit?
And isn’t that exactly what uncertainty demands from us?
One more step. One more moment of faith. One more chance to let clarity rise naturally, instead of forcing an answer.
On the Camino, your metaphors get physical.
You carry too much? Your back will tell you.
You ignore your gut? You’ll miss a turn.
You push too hard? Hello, blisters.
It’s gentle and fierce, this walking wisdom.
What Walking Taught Me About Uncertainty
I’ve met people on the Camino at all stages of life transition:
- A woman who had just sent her last child off to university and wasn’t sure who she was without the label “mum.”
- A corporate executive on a forced sabbatical after a merger, trying to remember what life felt like before KPIs and boardrooms.
- A man grieving the loss of his partner, walking slowly, almost reverently, as if each step was a prayer.
None of them had the answers when they started.
Most still didn’t have them when they finished.
But every single one came home changed.
Because something shifts when you move your body through an unfamiliar landscape.
You begin to access a deeper inner knowing—the kind that can’t be found in Google spreadsheets or pros-and-cons lists.
The Camino Isn’t the Only Way—But It’s a Pretty Good One
Of course, you don’t have to fly to Spain and walk hundreds of kilometres to find clarity (though, honestly, I recommend it—preferably with someone like me to handle the logistics and provide snacks and soul guidance).
You can walk through your own neighbourhood.
A nearby forest trail.
Even around your garden in lazy circles.
The secret is presence.
Walking without scrolling, calling, or solving.
Just… being with your breath. Your steps. Your messy, beautiful thoughts.
That’s where insight lives—not in the rush to “figure it all out,” but in the slowness of showing up.
But If You Do Want Something More Transformational…
This is where I get to gently and shamelessly plug something I’ve poured my heart into: my From Troubled to Triumphant Camino walking retreats.
They’re not just holidays.
They’re transformational journeys designed for people who are navigating life’s big, messy, in-between moments—career changes, divorce, burnout, retirement, grief, and reinvention.
Think:
Deep reflection with structured guidance
Gentle daily walks through stunning French countryside
Local food (because healing doesn’t require self-denial)
Space to breathe, think, and reconnect to what truly matters
And yes—there are laughs. Tears. Breakthroughs. New friendships. A few blisters. And more than one “aha” moment that will make you wonder why you didn’t do this sooner.
Not All Who Wander Are Lost… But Some Are—and That’s Okay
There’s something rebellious about slowing down when the world screams at you to hustle.
There’s something powerful about admitting you don’t know what’s next, and deciding to walk with that uncertainty instead of battling it.
Somewhere between step 1 and step 10,000, you start to loosen your grip on the outcome.
And that’s when clarity sneaks in—quietly, almost apologetically, like a long-lost friend returning after years away.
You realise you’re not broken. You’re just… becoming.
And walking helps that becoming unfold at exactly the pace you’re ready for.
A Few Walking Prompts (If You’re the Reflective Type)
If you’re heading out for a walk today—and I hope you are—here are a few questions you can carry in your pocket:
- What am I ready to release, even if I don’t have the next thing figured out?
- Where am I trying to force clarity, and what would happen if I paused instead?
- What decision feels too big to make all at once—and what’s the next right step I can take?
You don’t need to answer them right away. Just let them breathe. Let your steps hold the weight for a while.
Final Thoughts: The Way Forward Is Forward
If you’re in a season of uncertainty right now, please know this: You don’t need to see the whole path to take the next step.
You don’t need to have it all figured out before you begin.
Just move. Breathe. Listen.
And trust that clarity is a companion that joins you along the way—not a prerequisite to starting the journey.
Want to walk your way into your next chapter—literally and metaphorically?
