10 Powerful Life Lessons My Retreat Guests Learned While Walking the Camino de Santiago – a Guide
Dear Fellow Seeker of Meaningful Adventures,
Have you ever wondered what happens when busy professionals, active retirees, soul-searchers, and adventure-lovers trade their daily routines for ancient pilgrim paths through the French countryside?
Magic happens. Perspective shifts. Stories unfold.
For years, I’ve hosted intimate groups along the Camino de Santiago during my exclusive 5-day retreats. Along cobblestone streets and sun-dappled forest paths, I’ve witnessed remarkable transformations that have nothing to do with fitness levels and everything to do with the resilience of the human spirit.
What’s Waiting for You in This Free Guide?
Inside “10 Powerful Life Lessons My Retreat Guests Learned by Walking the Camino de Santiago,” you’ll meet:
- Marcus, whose overpacked bag taught him about the burdens we unnecessarily carry
- Eleanor, who found authentic connection where she least expected it
- David, who learned the difference between pain and suffering (hint: one is optional)
- Rebecca, whose detour became the highlight of her journey
- …and several other remarkable souls whose Camino stories might just mirror your own life in surprising ways

This Isn’t Just Another Travel Story Collection
These aren’t just “quaint anecdotes” or Instagram-worthy moments (though there are plenty of those). These are real transformations from real people who walked the same path you might want to walk one day walk.
Each story reveals a profound truth that my retreat guests discovered – not through my instruction, but through their own experience on the Camino.
This guide is for you if:
- You feel a mysterious pull toward the Camino de Santiago (even if you can’t explain why)
- You’re curious about how a simple walk could possibly change someone’s life
- You’re considering walking the full Camino but want to peek behind the curtain first
- You’re collecting wisdom for your own life journey, wherever it may lead
- You appreciate stories told with heart, humour, and a touch of French countryside charm
Why Am I Sharing These Stories?
Because the Camino’s magic HAS to be shared, especially with those who haven’t yet felt its cobblestones beneath their feet.
Because every time I witness these transformations, I’m reminded of the power of stepping away from our normal lives and into the ancient tradition of mindful walking.
And yes, because I hope these stories might inspire you to join us someday, adding your own chapter to the thousand-year history of Camino de Santiago adventurers.

About Your Guide

Hi, I’m Margaretha Montagu, lifelong wanderer, certified Camino enthusiast, and firm believer that sometimes you need to get lost to find yourself.
For the past 15 years, I’ve been leading private retreats along the Camino de Santiago, creating space for professionals, creatives, and seekers to step away from their everyday lives and into a centuries-old tradition of mindful walking.
My approach? Equal parts historical context, practical support, and knowing when to step back and let the Camino work its magic.
When I’m not hosting ancient pilgrim route retreats, you’ll find me writing yet another book, creating another course, mentoring some unsuspecting professional, feeding the hungry hordes (sorry, ‘horses’), or collecting stories that need to be told.
One Last Thing…
The Camino has a saying: “The Camino provides.”
I’ve found this to be true in ways both practical and profound. Sometimes it provides exactly what you need – a shady tree, a kind stranger, a moment of clarity.
Today, it might be providing you with these stories. Tomorrow? Who knows?
There’s only one way to find out.
Buen Camino, wherever your path may lead,
Margaretha
P.S. If you’re already feeling that unmistakable Camino pull, my retreats start every first and third Saturday from March to December. No pressure – but also no surprise if you find yourself inquiring after reading these stories. The Camino has a way of calling exactly who needs to walk it next.
