Looking Back and Taking Stock

Get back on Track

At the end of another year, most of us are looking forward to the coming year, tempted by the lure of new beginnings. Nothing wrong with that. I gave up making New Year’s resolutions some time ago, but I do choose a word for the new year, and my word, or rather two words for 2025, is “countless possibilities.”

In our relentless pursuit of future objectives though, we often forget to pause and reflect on the past. The simple act of looking back at our journey can reveal accomplishments that we might otherwise overlook. In the quest for success, we can become so focused on what lies ahead that we forget to pause, turn around, and appreciate how far we’ve already come. Reflecting on your progress and achievements is not just a healthy practice—it’s essential for personal growth.

Consider where you were five years ago, just before COVID—the challenges that seemed insurmountable, the skills you hadn’t yet mastered, the dreams that felt out of reach. Some of those obstacles that once loomed large have since become stepping stones on your path. That presentation you dreaded giving? Now you command the (Zoom) room with confidence. The technology that once baffled you? It’s become second nature.

Reflecting on past achievements offers a sense of perspective. In the whirlwind of everyday life, it’s easy to dismiss small victories or forget the obstacles you’ve overcome. But when you take the time to look back, those moments reveal the steady progress you have been making. Looking back reminds you that you ARE capable of overcoming challenges which makes you feel more confident in your abilities, boosting your motivation.

Our progress isn’t always linear or obvious. It’s like watching a garden grow. Daily changes may be imperceptible, but over time, the transformation is remarkable. Every setback you’ve weathered, every small victory you’ve celebrated, and every lesson you’ve learned has contributed to who you are today.

Looking back can remind you of all the blessings that came your way and make you feel grateful. By appreciating what you’ve achieved, you shift your mindset from focusing on scarcity or shortcomings to acknowledging abundance and progress. This gratitude can empower you to tackle future challenges with renewed vigour.

Acknowledging your progress this past year can serve as a powerful motivator. This forward momentum can inspire you to set ambitious goals, knowing that you have what it takes to reach them.

Achievement often conjures images of trophies, promotions, or financial success. But progress is not always about tangible markers. Growth can be seen in your emotional maturity, improved relationships, the skills you’ve mastered over time, the useful habits you’ve developed, the fears you’ve faced, the boundaries you’ve set, the kindness you’ve shown to others—these are all achievements equally worth recognising. Did you handle a difficult situation better than you would have a year ago? Have you built a life that aligns more closely with your values? These subtle, qualitative shifts are equally worthy of celebration.

Survival through difficult times is an achievement in itself, revealing your strengths and resilience.

How to Reflect on Your Achievements This Year

  1. Pause and Take Stock: Set aside time to reflect. Whether through journaling, meditating, or a quiet walk, intentionally focus on what you’ve accomplished in recent weeks, months, or years.
  2. List Your Wins: Write down your milestones, both big and small. The promotion, the degree, the habit you successfully cultivated, or the fear you overcame—they all count.
  3. Acknowledge the Challenges: Celebrate not just the outcomes but also the effort you put into overcoming obstacles. Success often emerges from perseverance through adversity.
  4. Share Your Story: Discussing your progress with friends or loved ones can provide fresh perspectives and encouragement, helping you see accomplishments you might have overlooked.

When you look back, don’t dwell on what went wrong in the past; focus on what you achieved and appreciate it. Use your reflections to inform your future decisions. What worked well? What lessons can you carry forward? When you celebrate your achievements, you build a mindset rooted in self-belief and gratitude, setting the stage for continued growth.

Looking Back During Life Transitions

It is especially important to look back during major life changes. Why? Because it helps you

1. Build Confidence and Increase Your Resilience

When you take time to look back at what you’ve achieved during your last life transition, or so far during a current transition, you increase your resilience. Recognising that you’ve successfully navigated challenges before boosts your confidence in facing new ones. As you reflect on your journey, you remind yourself of your ability to adapt and thrive, which is crucial during transitions.

2. Gain Clarity and Insight

Reflection allows you to dissect what your past experiences mean for your current situation. You can ask yourself questions like: “What did this change signify for me?” or “How does it align with my values?” This introspection helps clarify your goals and intentions moving forward, ensuring that your next steps are aligned with who you truly are.

3. Reframe Challenges as Opportunities

Transitions often come with mixed emotions—excitement, fear, or uncertainty. By reflecting on past transitions, you can shift your perspective from seeing these changes as losses to viewing them as opportunities for growth. This positive reframing empowers you to embrace new roles and possibilities that come with change.

4. Learn from Experience

Every life transition teaches us something valuable. Reflection helps you identify what worked well in the past and what didn’t. Instead of dwelling on regrets, you can approach future challenges with a clearer understanding of how to get through them.

5. Strengthen Relationships

Reflecting on your past experiences can also enhance your relationships with others. By understanding yourself better, you improve communication and empathy towards those around you. This deeper connection can be particularly beneficial during times of change when support from friends and family is essential.

6. Redefine your Sense of Purpose by

  • Gaining Insight: When you take time to reflect on your achievements, you gain valuable insights into what truly matters to you. This introspection helps clarify your values and intentions, allowing you to align your plans with who you really are.
  • Identifying Patterns and Preferences: Reflection enables you to recognise patterns in your past successes and challenges. This awareness can help you identify what truly brings you fulfilment and what might be holding you back. As you examine your past, you may discover that certain accomplishments brought you more satisfaction than others, providing clues about where to focus your energy in the future.
  • Reframing Your Narrative: By looking back at your achievements, you can reframe your personal narrative and see how far you’ve come. This perspective shift can inspire you to set new, more meaningful goals that align with your evolving sense of purpose. It allows you to move beyond a linear trajectory and consider alternative paths that may be more fulfilling.
  • Boosting Your Self-Confidence and Increasing Your Motivation: Acknowledging your past accomplishments boosts self-confidence and provides motivation for future endeavours. This increased self-assurance can positively impact your overall attitude and approach to new challenges, encouraging you to pursue goals that truly resonate with your redefined sense of purpose.

Life transitions can leave you feeling untethered—unsure of who you are, where you’re going, or how to move forward. It’s normal to feel anxious, even overwhelmed, to experience self-doubt, to worry about the future, and to feel isolated and unsupported.
