Exploring Mindfulness with Horses: An Introduction to Equine-Guided Meditation and Mantras

By Dr Margaretha Montagu

What is Equine-guided Meditation?

A Journey to Self-Awareness

Equine-guided mindfulness meditation is a type of meditation with a horse, or horses, as the focus. During equine-guided meditation, a person may interact with a horse, watch a horse, or simply be in the presence of a horse as a way to enhance their meditation experience.

Mindfulness meditation with horses can take many forms, from simply sitting near a horse to performing specific exercises and activities with a horse. In some cases, a horse may be used as a focal point for meditation, with the person focusing on the horse’s movements, behaviour or breathing as a way to reduce stress.

One of the benefits of equine-guided meditation is that it can help people connect with nature and animals in a meaningful way. Horses are known for their calming presence and their ability to help people relax and let go of stress. Being around horses can also help people develop a greater sense of mindful awareness, as they observe the horse’s body language and behaviour.

Equine-guided meditation can be particularly beneficial for people who are dealing with stress, anxiety, or trauma. The presence of a horse can provide a sense of safety and security, and can help people feel more grounded and centered. Additionally, the non-judgmental and accepting nature of horses can help people feel more at ease and less self-conscious during the meditation process.

Whether done alone or with a group, meditation with horses can be a powerful tool for reducing stress, improving focus and awareness, and connecting with nature and animals in a meaningful way.

Equine-guided Meditation Mantras

Can also be used as Affirmations

While mantras are typically used in traditional meditation practices, they can also be used in combination with horses for a more embodied experience. Here are some examples of mantras that can be used with horses:

  1. “I am calm and centred.” Repeat this mantra to yourself as you approach and work with your horse. This can help you to stay grounded and present in the moment, even if your horse is feeling anxious or distracted.
  2. “My heart is open.” This mantra can help to cultivate a sense of empathy and connection with your horse. As you work with your horse, imagine sending loving and kind energy from your heart to theirs.
  3. “I release control and trust the process.” Working with horses requires a certain degree of surrender and trust. Repeat this mantra to remind yourself to let go of expectations and allow things to unfold naturally.
  4. “I am grateful for this moment.” This simple mantra can help to cultivate a sense of gratitude and appreciation for the time you spend with your horse. Whether you’re riding, grooming, or just spending time together, take a moment to pause and reflect on the beauty of the present moment.
  5. “I am strong and confident.” Horses can be powerful animals, and working with them requires a certain level of physical strength and mental fortitude. Repeat this mantra to help boost your confidence and feel more capable as you work with your horse.
  6. “I am patient and compassionate.” Working with horses can be challenging at times, especially if they are feeling fearful or resistant. This mantra can help to cultivate a sense of patience and compassion, both for your horse and for yourself.
  7. “I trust my intuition.” Horses are incredibly intuitive animals, and working with them often requires tapping into your own intuition as well. Repeat this mantra to help strengthen your own intuitive abilities and trust your instincts as you work with your horse.
  8. “I am worthy of love and respect.” This mantra can help to cultivate a sense of self-love and self-respect, which can in turn help you to build a stronger, more trusting relationship with your horse.
  9. “I am present and mindful.” Horses can be powerful teachers when it comes to mindfulness and staying present in the moment. Repeat this mantra to help you stay focused and fully engaged in the experience of working with your horse.
  10. “I am connected to all beings.” Horses have a way of helping us feel more connected to the natural world and to other living beings. Repeat this mantra to help cultivate a sense of connection and interdependence with your horse and with all of nature.
