“The more we practice loving kindness, the more loving we become, and the more loving we become, the more others will respond with loving kindness.” – Louise Hay
In a world where stress, anxiety, and negativity seem to be the norm, it can be easy to become disconnected from our authentic selves, from others and from nature. We may find ourselves feeling lost, angry, frustrated or hurt by the actions of others or by our own internal struggle. Loving-kindness meditation can be a powerful tool to help us reconnect with ourselves and others, and with nature.
Horses and Loving-Kindness Meditation
I encounter loving kindness in abundance every time I step into my Friesian horses’ paddock. Horses are incredibly intuitive animals that have a profound effect on the human mind. They have the ability to connect with humans on a deep emotional level, which makes them great companions for anyone who practises loving-kindness meditation and mindfulness.
Loving-kindness meditation is a practice that involves directing positive thoughts and feelings towards oneself, others, and the world around us. It involves cultivating feelings of compassion, empathy, and goodwill, which are all qualities that horses seem to embody naturally.
Horses are known for their calming presence and ability to sense human emotions. They have the ability to read people’s energy and respond accordingly, which can be incredibly healing for those practising loving-kindness meditation. When you’re in the presence of a horse, you feel a sense of peace and serenity that can be hard to replicate anywhere else.
Many people who practice loving-kindness meditation with horses find that horses are incredibly receptive to their positive energy. Horses seem to enjoy being around people who are calm, centered, and full of positive emotions. They respond to these feelings by becoming more relaxed themselves, which creates a positive feedback loop that can be incredibly powerful.
One of the reasons why horses are such great companions for anyone practising mindfulness and loving-kindness meditation is that they are, in essence, forgiving animals. They don’t hold grudges or judge people based on their past mistakes. Instead, they focus on the present moment and respond to the energy they’re given in that moment. This can be profoundly healing for people who are struggling with feelings of guilt or shame.
Horses have a lot to teach us about loving kindness. They embody many of the qualities that we strive for in our meditation practice, such as forgiveness, gentleness, and empathy. If you’re looking to deepen your practice of loving-kindness meditation, spending time with horses may be just what you need to take it to the next level.
