Just because we are getting older, does not necessarily mean we need to be less active. On the contrary. Now that we have the time and the means to invest in our ongoing health and fitness, we should do so with unrestrained enthusiasm, whether we are in our 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and (why not?) 100’s!
With regular massage, older adults can experience an improved quality of life and feel fitter, younger and healthier.
These days, there is no such thing as a typical 50, 60, 70, 80 etc. year-old. One seventy-year-old might still be running marathons, while another is wheel-chair bound. One 80-year-old might insist on a deep tissue massage because she overdid it on the ballroom dance floor the night before, another might be too frail to get onto a massage table. Even if you are an active older adult, you may be on medication for a chronic disease, have had several injuries and operations…as older adults, we often suffer from a variety of such age-related diseases as arthritis, diabetes, cancer, heart disease or strokes. As a result, we have poor circulation and limited physical flexibility and range of movement. Many of us are also anxious, depressed and if we live on our own, lonely. Massage can help us maintain and improve our overall health, as well as retain physical functions that may be limited or lost due to ageing. It can relieve anxiety and depression and provide comfort to touch-deprived older adults. In addition, it can boost our immune system, increasing resistance against bacterial and viral infections as well as against the development of cancerous cells. Massage can improve balance and posture in older adults, reducing the risk of falling and injuring joints such as the wrists, arms, hips and knees. It can also speed up recovery after injury. Many older adults also have problems sleeping, massage can improve the quantity and quality of our sleep.
